ABOUT THE DAFF BURSARY

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) bursary is intended to assist students who wish to pursue further studies in the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors, which is a scarce skills area in South Africa.

Please note that certain qualifications are only offered at certain institutions, such as the following:

  • Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering) – available at The University of KwaZulu-Natal only
  • Forestry – available at The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University only
  • Forestry and Wood Science – available at The University of Stellenbosch only
  • Ichthyology specialising in Aquaculture – available at Rhodes University only
  • Marine Science – available at The Cape Peninsula University of Technology only
  • Oceanography and Marine Biology – available at The University of Cape Town only
  • Veterinary Science – available at The University of Pretoria only
  • Viticulture and Oenology – available at The University of Stellenbosch only

Postgraduate students will be entered into the internship programme and placed as young professionals. Students will also receive a monthly stipend and a mentor to guide them.
 
 

VALUE OF THE DAFF BURSARY

The following will be covered by the DAFF bursary:
Tuition, books, accommodation, meals and a monthly allowance.

Undergraduate:

  • Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering) (BSc)
  • Entomology (BSc)
  • Food Science (BSc)
  • Food Technology (National Diploma)
  • Forestry (National Diploma)
  • Forestry and Wood Science (BSc)
  • Ichthyology, specialising in Aquaculture (BSc)
  • Marine Biology (BSc)
  • Marine Science (National Diploma)
  • Oceanography and Marine Biology (BSc)
  • Plant Pathology (BSc)
  • Veterinary Science (BVSc)
  • Viticulture and Oenology (BSc)

Postgraduate:

  • Agriculture, forestry and fisheries fields relating to DAFF priority research projects (BSc/ BTech/ MSc/ MTech/ Hons/ DTech/ PhD)

 
 

WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE DAFF BURSARY

Students must meet the following minimum requirements before submitting their application – failure to meet all the requirements will result in an unsuccessful application:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have an excellent academic portfolio/ record
  • Must be previously disadvantaged or impoverished from a rural or poverty-stricken area
  • Must be currently studying towards one of the qualifications stated above
  • Bioresource Engineering(Agricultural Engineering) students: must have received a minimum of Level 6 (70 – 79%) for Matric Mathematics and Physical Science
  • Veterinary Science students: must have received a minimum of Level 6 (70 – 79%) for Matric Physical Science and Mathematics
  • All other BSc students: must have received a minimum of Level 5 (60 – 69%) for Matric Physical Science and Mathematics
  • National Diploma students: must have received a minimum of Level 4 (50 – 59%) for Matric Physical Science and Mathematics

Please ensure that you attach copies of these documents when applying (as a minimum):

  • South African Identity Document (certified copy)
  • Highest qualification certificate (Matric certificate if an Undergraduate student, Undergraduate certificate if a Postgraduate student)
  • Latest academic transcripts
  • Admission letter from a South African university
  • Any other documents you feel may be beneficial to your application
  • Parents or guardians proof of income/ proof of grant income
