1) Potatoes South Africa Bursary Scheme for 2017 / 2018

The Potato Industry Development Trust, through Potatoes South Africa, provides bursaries to diploma, undergraduate and post graduate students studying agriculture at a tertiary institution in South Africa. The primary goals for providing these bursaries are as follows:

Diploma and undergraduate studies

  • To provide talented young students the opportunity to develop their skills and thereby enhance the technical capacity of these enterprises.
  • To provide other deserving students who wish to enter the agricultural industry the opportunity to obtain an appropriate qualification and develop technical skills to find employment in the industry.

Postgraduate studies

  • To make a contribution towards ensuring that well qualified scientists are developed to address the research needs of the potato industry.
  • To increase the potato industry’s pool of knowledge.

Who can apply?
Diploma and undergraduate studies

  • Second year students in the field of agriculture.
  • Students with excellent academic standing.
  • South African citizens.
  • Must provide official proof of registration at a South African tertiary institution.

Postgraduate studies

  • Honours, Masters and PhD students in the field of agriculture – potatoes. (Masters and PhD students to submit a potato related research proposal.)
  • Must have excellent academic standing.
  • South African citizens.
  • Proof of registration at an appropriate South African university

Conditions of the bursary After completion of the studies the student must work for a potato industry related company, organisation or institution in the Republic of South Africa as approved by the Potato Industry Development Trust equivalent to the period of the bursary.

Opportunities All students are given the opportunities to get to know the potato industry through an annual induction programme that takes place in April. The program includes visits to a fresh produce market, a potato farm, a processing plant and research facilities. Diploma and undergraduate students will be given the opportunity to enhance their skills through an internship (for disciplines requiring practical training and exposure as part of their qualification condition) and a workplace experience program to enhance their employment opportunities.

2) THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY AND FISHERIES BURSARY for 2017 / 2018

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries intends to award comprehensive bursaries to qualifying applicants pursuing and/or intending to further their studies in critical scarce skills in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors. The bursaries will cover tuition, accommodation, books, meals and monthly allowance. The bursary awards target the previously disadvantaged and impoverished persons
from poverty-stricken and deep rural communities.

4) The South African Agricultural Union Bursary for 2017 / 2018

Who Can Apply Students who want to study agriculture, preferably children of farmers, permanent staff of agricultural organisations, etc. The award is renewable annually dependent upon the student’s progress.

5) SA Society for Crop Production (Undergraduate Bursary) for 2017 / 2018

Tenable South African universities

Who Can Apply for this bursary Candidates must be registered for a four year or post-graduate degree (not diploma) at an university in the Republic of South Africa during that year. Candidates must be registered to study in a major subject related to the general area of Crop Production (Agronomy / Crop Science). Candidates must have maintained an average mark of at least 60% during the previous university academic year.

6) Industrial Development Corporation Bursary (Commercial Sciences) for 2017 / 2018

Value of Bursary: The value of the bursary for full-time undergraduate/ diploma studies comprises of the following:

  • Boarding: In the case of bursars residing with their parents/guardians or privately, a stipend is granted. In the case of students residing in official University/ University of Technology residences, full residence fees are paid to the relevant institution (Catering/Self-catering residences).
  • Tuition and registration fees: A stipend for books and stationery is granted bi-annually.

Duration Bursaries are renewable annually, subject to acceptable proof of progress from the institution.

Who Can Apply
• Applicants must have Grade 12 Maths and Science with a minimum of level 6.
• University or University of Technology students who have already successfully completed one or more years will be considered on their Grade 12 and most recent academic results.
• If you are already studying towards a degree course for which you are applying for a bursary, you must have passed all courses for which you have registered at the university for the study period already completed.
• Applications must be for full time studies towards an academic degree at an accredited South African university or university of technology. Fields of study in which bursaries are awarded have to be directly related to industry, and will only include the following:in Applied Commercial Sciences: BCom (Accountancy CA), BCom Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Investment Management, Agriculture, Environmental Science.

Service Contract Bursars may be expected to remain in the employ of the Corporation for a period equal to the number of years of the awarded bursary. Such employment is subject to the normal selection procedures and salary and employment

7) REAP (Rural Education Access Program) Bursary for 2017 / 2018

Our Vision is to see hundreds of young rural South Africans equipped with the skills, qualifications, values and motivation necessary to effectively lead and serve their communities.

8) NEET (National Economic Education Trust Fund) Bursary for 2017 / 2018

NEET is a non-profitable organisation that offers bursaries for disadvantaged students. We also provide on-going support during studies via the online Student Management Portal for early intervention and even facilitates internships and job placements after graduation where possible.

9) South African Association of Women Graduates (SAAWG) Bursary for 2017 / 2018

In conjunction with IFUW and FUWA the focus of SAAWG is the graduate woman. The Association is committed to:

  • Improving the status of women and girls
  • Furthering the development of education
  • Assisting women to move into decision-making positions
  • Protecting human rights
  • Promoting peace

The SAAWG promotes the tertiary education of women and their self-development over their lifespan. It seeks equity for women graduates, cross cultural insights and co-operation, and societal advancement. Its great underlying purpose is world peace, brought about through education and international friendship.

Bertha Stoneman Award
Availability: For a female undertaking postgraduate studies / research in Botany, Natural Sciences or related studies (including Environmental Studies).

Annual Value: R2 000.00

Isie Smuts Award
Availability: For a female undertaking postgraduate studies / research in any field (option for renewal).
Annual Value: R1 300.00

Mary Agard Pocock Award
Availability: For a female undertaking postgraduate studies / research in Botany, Natural Sciences or related studies (including Environmental Studies).
Annual Value: R1 300.00

SAAWG International Fellowship Award
Availability: For a foreign female who is enrolled with a South African University for at least one year of postgraduate research.
Value: R1 300.00

Note: Awarded biennially.
Applications due by 15 February annually.

Hansi Pollak Fellowship
Availability: For a female undertaking postgraduate research directed towards bettering social conditions in South Africa. The recipient is required to spend at least two years in the RSA after completing the degree, implementing the results of the research.
Value: R3 000.00 per year for two years.

10) Agricultural Research Council (ARC) Bursary for 2017 – 2018

Value R20,000 per annum for National Diploma bursaries, R15,000 per annum for ordinary bursaries

Who can apply? Students who are studying for the National Diploma in Agricultural Research (Botany), Food Technology, Horticulture, Microbiology or Information Technology. Good Grade 12 grades (A or B in Mathematics, Science/Biology).

12) Humphrey Fellowship Program for 2017 / 2018

About The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides ten months of non-degree academic study and related professional experiences in the United States. About Mondi offers various bursaries to students studying 1st year of BSc Forestry at Stellenbosch University.

14) Mondi (National Diploma Forestry) Bursary for 2017 / 2018

About Mondi offers various bursaries to students completing 1st year of the Forestry Traineeship by community youth. No “outside” students are considered initially. 2nd year practical is recorded under “Forestry Practical – Work Experience opportunities” where “outside” students are considered.

15) Sappi Bursary Scheme for 2017 / 2018

About Sappi offers full financial sponsorship to selected individuals. These individuals need to apply formally to the HR-department for a bursary wherefrom, based on academic and psychometric testing results, individuals would be selected and fully supported with all study related costs.
